JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL COURSE DESCRIPTION/GENERAL

The Music, Art, Physical Education, and Health Junior High School Series is K to 12 curricula compliant. It supports the nurturing and refining the artistic expression and cultural literacy of students and celebrating national heritage and instilling within them pride in their cultural identity. The subject is divided into four sections: Music, Art, Physical Education, and Health

Music and Art are performance-based disciplines. Effective learning occurs through active experience, participation and performance, creative expression, aesthetic valuation, critical response, and interpretation. The skills that are developed include reading/analyzing, listening/observing, performing (singing, using musical instruments, moving, acting, and playing using different materials, techniques, and processes) responding composing, and creating.

Physical Education contributes to the development of fitness, health and wellness among school-age students as provided in the programs rich and challenging physical activity experiences. It promotes the development of a participative and active body. The desire to be physically fit aids an individual in successfully participating in activities appropriate at various stages of life.

Health focuses on the physical, mental, emotional, social, moral, and spiritual dimensions of holistic health. Health enables students to acquire essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to promote good nutrition, prevent and control diseases and substance misuse and abuse, and reduce health-related injuries.

LABORATORY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COURSE DESCRIPTION /GENERAL MUSIC and ARTS

Both the Music and the Arts curricula focus on the learner as recipient of the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for artistic expression and cultural literacy. The design of the curricula is student-centered, based on spiral progression of processes, concepts and skills and grounded in performance based learning. Thus, the learner is empowered, through active involvement and participation, to effectively correlate music and art to the development of his/her own cultural identity and the expansion of his/her vision of the world. The components aim to discuss fundamentals and theories that every student should learn through singing, listening, reading, playing, and creating. This also brings the students to a deeper understanding and greater knowledge of the Philippine music and art history.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This component allows students to become more equipped to learn about body mechanics, good posture, and different games and sports activities. Values like cooperation, teamwork, concern for others, sportsmanship and self- confidence are also focused. This part of MAPEH program enhances the knowledge and skills of students in different areas of Physical Education promoting active lifestyle among students.

HEALTH

The Health curriculum aims to assist the Filipino learner in attaining, sustaining and promoting life-long health and wellness. The learning experience through the program provides opportunities for the development of health literacy competencies among students and to enhance their over-all wellbeing. Health Education focuses on the physical, mental, emotional, as well as the social, moral and spiritual dimensions of holistic health. It enables the learners to acquire essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills that are necessary to promote good nutrition; to prevent and control diseases; to prevent substance misuse and abuse; with the end-view of maintaining and improving personal, family, and community health.

GRADE 1 MUSIC

A component of MAPEH which aims to introduce the fundamental processes that every student should learn through singing, listening, reading, playing, and creating. This also brings the students to a deeper understanding and greater knowledge of the Philippine music history.

ARTS

Component of MAPEH that needs to be acquired, developed, and appreciated. This component focuses on the introduction of the basic elements of arts, color awareness, drawing and printing and three-dimensional works and simple sculpture.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This component allows students to become more equipped to learn about body mechanics, good posture, and different games and sports activities wherein values like cooperation, teamwork, concern for others, sportsmanship and self-confidence are also focused. Students are expected to participate in enjoyable singing games, action songs, simple games, Chasing/Fleeing type games and mimetics.

HEALTH

This MAPEH component gives the students a direct knowledge in nutrition, personal health, injury prevention, safety and first aid for a healthy lifestyle.

GRADE 2 MUSIC

A component of MAPEH which aims to enhance the fundamental processes that every student should learn through singing, listening, reading, playing, and creating. This also brings the students to a deeper understanding and greater knowledge of the Philippine music history.

ARTS

Component of MAPEH that aims to enhance creative expression and art appreciation through drawing,

printmaking, sculpture, crafts, painting, and other processes that will allow students to get familiar with varying art tools, as well as new art concepts and techniques.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This component allows students to become more equipped to learn about body mechanics, good posture, and different games and sports activities wherein values like cooperation, teamwork, concern for others, sportsmanship and self-confidence are also focused. Students are expected to participate in enjoyable activities in different locomotor, non- locomotor and manipulative activities,folk dances, rhythmic routines (ribbon, hoop, balls, indigenous/improvised materials), relays and race.

HEALTH

This MAPEH component gives the students a direct knowledge in nutrition, personal health, prevention and control of diseases and disorders, family health, injury prevention, safety and first aid for a healthy lifestyle.

GRADE 3 MUSIC

A component of MAPEH which aims to discuss the fundamental processes and theories that every student should learn through performing, creating, and responding. This also brings the students to appreciate music, acquire basic knowledge and skills and a deeper understanding of the Philippine music history.

ARTS

Component of MAPEH that needs to be acquired, developed, and appreciated. This component focuses on the development of the student’s knowledge, skills, and values necessary for artistic expression and cultural literacy.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This component allows students to become more equipped to learn about body mechanics, good posture, and different games and sports activities wherein values like cooperation, teamwork, concern for others, sportsmanship and self-confidence are also focused. Students are expected to participate in enjoyable and challenging activities in different locomotor, non-locomotor and manipulative activities,simple folk dance, rhythmic routines (ribbon, hoop, balls, etc.)Lead- up and organized games(indigenous) and corrective exercises.

HEALTH

This MAPEH component gives the students a direct knowledge in nutrition, personal health, prevention and control of diseases and disorders, consumer health, injury prevention, safety and first aid, community and environmental health for a healthy lifestyle.

GRADE 4 MUSIC

The component of MAPEH aims to develop knowledge on the basic concepts of rhythm and musical symbols that facilitates a high level of music appreciation, the basic concepts of rhythm and other musical symbols and learning the concepts of melody. It also aims to discuss fundamentals and theories that every student should learn through singing, listening, reading, playing, and creating. This also brings the students to a deeper understanding and greater knowledge of the Philippine music history.

ARTS

The component of MAPEH aims to expand the knowledge about the exposure to the attire and body accessories of the cultural activities in the Philippines, geography and status of a regions inhabitants, telling stories about culture and community through painting, expresses meanings and ideas using colors and shapes in different ways. In addition, it aims to develop the needs to be acquired, developed, and appreciated. This component focuses on how the elements of arts are organized, the functions of art, the mediums and techniques used, and history of art.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This component allows students to learn the various principles and concepts of target games that supports the development of competence in movement and motor skills, to play invasion games that enhances pupils to develop self- control and motor skills; develop basic skills in basketball and volleyball; enhances flexibility in dancing; learn the activity pyramid indicators and folk dance to enhance physical fitness. In addition, this aims to become more equipped to learn about body mechanics, good posture, and different games and sports activities. The component aims to develop the values like cooperation, teamwork, concern for others, sportsmanship and self-confidence are also focused. This part of MAPEH program enhances the knowledge and skills of students in different areas of Physical Education promoting active lifestyle among students.

HEALTH

The MAPEH component gives the students a direct knowledge about the food labels, food products, keeping food clean and safe; to know the causes, signs and symptoms of foodborne diseases; to understand the nature of communicable diseases; to understand the proper procedure to prevent; to realize how disease agent spread and how to break the chain of infection. In addition, the component aims to share knowledge in stages of growth and development, availability and functions of first aid services, different health disorders and nutritional values for adopting a healthy lifestyle.

GRADE 5 MUSIC

This MAPEH component aims to discuss basic concept about rhythm to enhance pupils’ appreciation of music; to learn the concept of melody that helps in developing one’s musical intelligence; to distinguish the musical structure of a musical composition as well as the vocal and instrumental characteristics of sound through its form and timbre. In addition, the component aims to explain the form and timbre of music fundamentals and theories that every student should learn through singing, listening, reading, playing, and creating. This also brings the students to a deeper understanding and greater knowledge of the Philippine music history.

ARTS

This MAPEH component develops visual expression through drawing events, painting events and occurrence; In addition, this component needs to be acquired, developed, and appreciated. This component also focuses on how the elements of arts are organized, the functions of art, the mediums and techniques used, and history of art.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This MAPEH component allows students to know physical activities and play target games to inculcate the positive values and skills among pupils; to learn the Philippine Physical Activity Pyramid, assessment for regular participation in physical activities, areas of improvement in fitness, fitness components and invasion games that enhance one’s fitness based on accurate information; participate in playing basic skill in basketball and volleyball with different groups; to do the different passing and shooting of basketball; follow the rules in playing volleyball and basketball; inculcate the positive values and skills in physical activities and target games; to know the areas for improvement in fitness, fitness component and invasion games; enhance one’s fitness based on accurate information; knows the history, tradition, culture and values of the region where it came from; participate in folk dancing; understanding the cultural roots and tradition of each dance,

utilize the rhythm and dance in physical activities. In addition, it encourages the pupils to participate well, become more equipped to learn about body mechanics, good posture, and different games and sports activities.

Values like cooperation, teamwork, concern for others, sportsmanship and self-confidence are also focused. This part of MAPEH program enhances the knowledge and skills of students in different areas of Physical Education promoting active lifestyle among students.

HEALTH

This MAPEH component gives the students know the nature of personal health that helps improving their health;

to have clear understanding of the body changes during puberty that leads to better growth and development; to understand the improper use of gateway drugs that damage emotional and physical wellness of the person a direct knowledge in stages of growth and development; In addition this component aims to learn the availability and functions of first aid services, different health disorders and nutritional values for a adopting a healthy lifestyle.

GRADE 6 MUSIC

The component of MAPEH aims to learn the rhythmic pattern, rhythmic syllables and other musical symbols and concepts; to develop one’s musical intelligence and skills. In addition, this component discusses fundamentals and theories that every student should learn through singing, listening, reading, playing, and creating. This also brings the students to a deeper understanding and greater knowledge of the Philippine music history.

ARTS

The component of MAPEH aims to convey important ideas or information of visual world; to condense personal or business images; to create simple, clear and unique logos; to create expressive forms that convey meaning through logo design, visual elements and principles of design; to take advantages of the characteristics and qualities of techniques and processes of their media that enhance the communication of their ideas; to be able to use computer as the art medium of our time; to enhance the communication of their ideas as digital painters; In addition, the component aims to develop the needs to be acquired, developed, and appreciated. This component focuses on how the elements of arts are organized, the functions of art, the mediums and techniques used, and history of art.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This component allows students to understand the concepts of physical fitness that makes one engage in the right physical activities; to recognize the importance of well-being that make pupils discern the significance of fitness assessment tests; to make the pupil s more skillful and adopt to real life situations; to understand the evolution of Filipino folk dances that helps one to have a profound respect to the Filipino culture and traditions; to know the rules and

regulations of basketball and volleyball; to apply the rules in scoring and playing basketball and volleyball; to utilize the body parts in creating movements; to involve the pupils in the dance activities that makes the pupils discern the meaning and value of physical activities; In addition, the component aims the pupils to become more equipped to learn about body mechanics, good posture, and different games and sports activities.

Values like cooperation, teamwork, concern for others, sportsmanship and self-confidence are also focused. This part of MAPEH program enhances the knowledge and skills of students in different areas of Physical Education promoting active lifestyle among students.

HEALTH

This MAPEH component develops the awareness on physical changes experienced by boys and girls during the puberty stage; helps the pupils to strengthening their self-management skills; to achieve the environmental health awareness that contributes in resolving environmental issues; gives the students a direct knowledge in stages of growth and development, availability and functions of first aid services, different health disorders and nutritional values for adopting a healthy lifestyle.

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL / COURSE DESCRIPTION GRADE 7

The Music component of MAPEH aims to discuss fundamentals and theories that every student should learn through singing, listening, reading, playing, and creating. This also brings the students to a deeper understanding and greater knowledge of the Philippine music history including secular and non-secular music in the Philippines.

The ART component focuses on how the elements of arts are organized, the functions of art, the mediums and techniques used, and history of art. Includes activities about different forms of arts such as visual arts and theatre arts.

Skills will be acquired, developed, and appreciated through hands on activities, exercises and creating art works using different materials.

The Physical Education component allows students to become more equipped to learn about body mechanics, good posture, and different games and sports activities. Values like discipline, concern for others, sportsmanship and self- confidence are also focused. This part of MAPEH program enhances the knowledge and skills of students in different areas of Physical Education promoting active lifestyle among students.

GRADE 8

As Asian Music and Arts are performance-based disciplines, effective learning occurs through active experience, participation, and performance, creative expression, aesthetic valuation, critical response, and interpretation.

The skills that are developed include reading/analyzing, listening/observing, performing, (singing, movement, acting, and playing, using different art materials, techniques and processes, responding, composing, and creating.

The Physical Education program provides each student with the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive program consisting of skill development, lead up games, team sports, and physical fitness activities. The students receive instruction in rules, skills, and strategies associated with the different sports as well as learning experiences involving physical conditioning activities and lifelong physical activities. The program promotes the spirit of cooperation, leadership, fair play, and friendly competition.

The Health curriculum, conducted in conjunction with the Physical Education program, is designed to help individuals become sensitive, healthy persons who take an active role in protecting, maintaining, and improving their health. GRADE 9

The course focuses on the four main parts such as Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health. The knowledge, understanding, skills and values derived from these areas are important for preparing the students to interact and prosper in an increasingly complex and diverse society.

Music- discusses and presents concepts and elements of music to be able to enrich one’s understanding of the musical concepts like singing, listening, playing and creating. Topics include music of the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic Period.

Art- discusses concepts about the earliest examples of art. Students will be given freedom of self-expression as well as the opportunity to develop their creative potentials. Topics include Pre-Historic Mesopotamian and Egyptian Art, Classical art, Medieval Period, Renaissance Period, Baroque Period, Neo- Classical Period, Romanticism and Realism.

Physical Education- deals with the various physical activities which facilitate the development of the potentials and skills of the students. Topics include Cotillion and Cha-cha dances, Badminton, Table Tennis and Volleyball games.

Health- discusses the importance of maintaining good personal and community health. Students will learn healthy tips necessary for a successful and meaningful life and community. Topic includes Community and Environmental Health and Prevention of Substance Use and Abuse.

At the end of the school year, with the use of collaborative approach and interactive learning activities, the course expects the students develop their well-being and become healthy, active and productive citizens of the country.

Content in Music Education are associated with contemporary music application with discussion on pop music like ballad, pop standards, rock and roll, alternative rock, and disco or its modern term Electronic Dance Music (EDM).

The students can demonstrate understanding of the lessons through music appreciation and analysis, and performance.

Subject matters in Art Education are also connected with contemporary art with discussion on 21ST century multimedia forms like, digital photography, video games, and digital printing and imaging videos. It also discusses various forms and element of art, modern art like cubism, surrealism, pop art, and op art. The students can display an understanding through art appreciation, analysis, and performance. Students are also given opportunities to create various art forms using locally available materials.

Topics in Physical Education include a thorough discussion of concepts in Physical Education and a comprehensive presentation of physical fitness activities. Activities are linked with societal fitness with discussion on hip- hop dance, Zumba, and cheer dance. The students can show understanding on the dance styles of hip-hop and stunts on cheerleading through performance.

Areas of concern in Health Education are related to consumer health; national and global health trends, issues and concerns like Reproductive Health and Cyber Crime Law; and the development of a health plan and exploration of careers in health to achieve, sustain and promote health and wellness. The students can prove themselves knowledgeable enough to pick a career path that they will find satisfying and rewarding.
